Tommy Scherer, the license holder for T&G Roofing, began roofing in 1978 in Hollywood, CA. He learned from a professional how to install shingles and later learned all of the aspects of hot tar roofing. He was part owner and in charge of all roofing delivery for several years in the early 80’s. He was “hands on” doing the roofing himself for 10+ years. He installed several wood shake roofs by himself that are still functioning today (2010).
In 1988 Tommy took the test to become a roofing contractor. He passed on his first try and began his own company, T&G Roofing. This roofing company became proficient at hot tar roofing and began to work closely with the manufacturers of hot tar and shingles. After a short time, T&G Roofing Co. was awarded “Master Installer” for hot tar roofing systems with G.A.F. manufacturing company, the largest manufacturer of roofing materials in North America. This certificate is not given out casually and only a handful of contractors in L.A. have achieved it.
This status allowed T&G to offer manufacturers' warranties on the work they did. T&G began bidding larger jobs and before long found themselves roofing the entire Westchester High School, a $1.4 million project. The results were exceptional. Utilizing all of the techniques required by the highest authorities in the field, T&G continued installing hot tar systems through the 90’s and into the 21st century. Tommy’s motto was to install roofing to the “highest standards.” This operating basis has followed through to this day. T&G does everything “right.” Even economically driven jobs are done correctly.
In 2005 Tommy attended the yearly “”Roofers Convention” in Las Vegas and began looking at “single ply” roofing. He had tried several different types of roofing over the years, such as coatings, with results not meeting the initial claims boasted by the salesmen. So he was very leery of “new” product lines. The hot tar was “solid” and he stuck with it. The single ply roofing, however, continued to emerge as a “superior” roofing system. (Single ply roofing is simply a material that resembles vinyl flooring that comes in large rolls) Tommy did research on the validity of the product for 3 years. He found that the many manufacturers of the product had been changing their formula continually since the early 90s with varying results. He also found that a stabilization had occurred around 2005 and the product was routinely outperforming traditional hot tar roofs.
T&G established a relationship with “Versico” Corp., the leader in single ply products, and had his foreman and crew get trained at Versico’s plant on how to install the product correctly. They began installing single ply roofs in 2007 with excellent results. Tommy saw that this product would be replacing hot tar roofing in the near future and after a dozen or so successful single ply jobs T&G, a hot tar roofing “master” installer began to sell their antiquated and dangerous hot tar equipment and turn toward the future of roofing, single ply.
To date T&G prides themselves on installing roofing to the highest standards in the industry, staying in close touch with the latest tools and techniques provided by the manufacturers.
(T&G is an approved applicator for G.A.F. for hot tar Elk/GAF for shingles, “Versico” for single ply installs, League of California Homeowners, Better Business Bureau “A” rating, liability insurance, Workers compensation.)
